23rd Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville
2006 Edition

May 18 — 22, 2006

The 23rd FIMAV: A Genre-Hopping Success!

The 23rd FIMAV was a strong and a loud one: strong programming, loud music and thundering results on stage. This edition was structured around the voice, rock music and noise. And let’s not forget Mike Patton, a strong presence at this FIMAV with three performances in major concerts with Fennesz, Zu & Rahzel.

Thanks to dynamic and young programming, and an increased number of women on stage, audiences were treated to an unusual level of musical diversity. All six Sunday concerts received a standing ovation, a first in the history of FIMAV. New musical aesthetics were targeted at a slightly younger audience. However, new jazz fans still had something to rave about, even though the genre was less prominent than usual. Worth of note in that category were unforgettable performances by the New York trio Fieldwork, Mandarin Movie and Pierre Cartier’s Chansons de la belle espérance. Mei Han, Satoko Fujii and the Nels Cline, Andrea Parkins & Tom Rainey trio were the other jazz-related concerts this year.

With his three concerts of improvised music, vocalist Mike Patton met the expectations of our regulars. In a duo with electronician Fennesz, the Italian trio Zu and beatboxer Rahzel (for the closing show), Mike Patton has proved that his voice is a near-endless source of sonic experiments.

True to themselves, Keiji Haino and Sunn O))) delivered impressive performances in an uncanny atmosphere.

Charming Hostess’ a capella concert, the Nunavik throat singers performing with the Belgian group Think of One and the electronic poetry of D Kimm & Alexis O’Hara have demonstrated all the finesse of the vocal art.

Finally, with such a wild programming this year, FIMAV offered audiences, artists and crewmembers a chance to live the intensity of music in all its diversity!

What will the 24th FIMAV has in store for us all? It is obviously too early to tell, but one thing is sure: it will still be home to audacity and creativity. Thank you all, artists and members of the audience; you are our inspiration.

See you next year, from May 17 to 21 for more unlikely and rich musical adventures!
