Charlotte Hug : alto, voix
CHARLOTTE HUG, sorceress of the viola, an instrument seldom seen in creative music, has earned a prized spot on the European free improvisation stage.
Born in Switzerland where she received classical music training, she turned to research and improvisation, and moved to London to raise her profile playing in the London Improvisers Orchestra and Tony Wren’s Quatuor Accorde.
HUG is notable for her unique extended techniques (like the “soft bow” where the hairs of the bow are fully distended to elicit confounding sounds), her unmatched sensibility and the uncanny way she blends her voice to her instrument. Put simply, she is a bewitching performer.
HUG came to Victoriaville twice already: in 2004 for a duet with Chantale Laplante and in 2010 with Jacques Demierre and Urs Leimgruber’s “Six”. At that second appearance, she delivered a solo so phenomenal that an invitation to come back on her own was only a matter of time.
