Filmmaker Karl Lemieux grew up in Kingsey Falls, near Victoriaville, with the FIMAV, which he regularly attended. The noise improvisation and electroacoustic concerts, he attended, had a major influence on his artistic development. He even stated in an interview that he wanted to do with images what those musicians were doing with sound. And since 2003, that’s what he does, through a filmography that includes many live film alterations, collage, and abstract animations. He often collaborates on live performances with musicians revolving around the Montreal labels Constellation, Alien8 and Squint Fucker Press.
FIMAV, in its first-ever film programming, is very proud to feature Karl Lemieux. On opening night, before the performance by “Land of Kush,” will be shown Lemieux’s recent short “Mamori” (8 minutes), an abstract animation made using field footages shot in Amazonia, on an original soundtrack by Francisco López created from field recordings made at the same location.
In addition, for the whole duration of the Festival, at the FIMAV’s hub Bar du Colisée, we will be showing a brand-new, specially commissioned short, “Instabilités elliptiques”, a video rephotography of loops of 16mm film Lemieux has painted on, scratched on, and burned in real time; the print left by an impossible past and future on a trajectory where present is crumbling down.
