Jean-Luc Guionnet : orgue
If there ever was a multifaceted artist, it is JEAN-LUC GUIONNET. He is mostly known as an alto saxophone player, an instrument with which he is just as likely to perform ferocious free jazz (with Return of the New Thing or The Ames Room) or whisper-quiet collective improvisation – some will remember the shocking performance by his group Hubbub at FIMAV 2005.
GUIONNET is also an illustrator, theoretician, eletroacoustician, sound installation artist, and... organist. He has been exploring the church organ for decades. His work focuses in part on hijacking the mechanics of the instrument: barely pulled registers that let in just a gasp of air, the sound of moving articulated elements – “extended techniques” for an instrument usually known for its grandiloquence. These unusual sounds – especially inside a church – become the building blocks of a mechanoacoustic music whose playing field ranges from inaudible to implacable.
