KARL LEMIEUX / BJ NILSEN
« Unearthed » « Yujiapu »
THURSDAY MAY 18
MIDNIGHT - $20
BJ Nilsen : échantillonneur, électroniques
Karl Lemieux : projections films 16 mm
Filmmaker KARL LEMIEUX hails from Victoriaville, where he grew up attending FIMAV. He maintains multiple musical collaborations with the Montreal band Godspeed You! Black Emperor and its various spin-offs. His short film Mamori (with music by Francisco López) was screened at the 26th FIMAV in 2010. He recently released his first feature film, Shambles.
BENNY JONAS NILSEN is a master field recordist. A pupil of the great Chris Watson, he started out under the alias Hazard before changing his artist name to BJ NILSEN. He is mostly interested in the sound of nature and its effects on mankind. His striking sense of audio narrative can be heard on a string of influential albums released by Touch and Ash International.
LEMIEUX and NILSEN will be presenting two recent collaborations for five 16 mm projectors and soundtrack. The audiovisual source materials for « Unearthed » come from a landscape at the limits of industrialization and the wide expanses of the Arctic, on the Russian-Norwegian border. « Yujiapu » features a modern Chinese city that has been abandoned halfway through its construction. Two amply nuanced and deeply reflective works.
