A figurehead of traditional and improvised music on the West Coast scene, LAN TUNG sings and plays the erhu, a Chinese violin. She has been pursuing several musical projects since her arrival in Canada in 1994, among them the more traditional trio Orchid Ensemble and the band PROLIFERASIAN, where her instrument has carved itself a place under the avant-jazz sun alongside household Vancouver names like JP CARTER and RON SAMWORTH.

LAN TUNG also organizes the Asian music Festival Sound of Dragon Music, and it is for this Festival that she decided, in 2014, to bring together PROLIFERASIAN and Taiwan’s LITTLE GIANT CHINESE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA conducted by her childhood friend CHIH-SHENG CHEN. The experience was so successful that she decided to develop the project further, writing a repertoire and designing an improvisation and conduction language that would help build bridges between these two groups of musicians with widely different cultures and interests.

« The Giant Project » boasts uncompromising hybrid music with a stunningly rich instrumentation. With it, LAN TUNG is reinventing the codes and creating new traditions.
