Karl Lemieux
Experimental Film Commissioner
I’m a filmmaker whose work explores the dialogue between cinema, music, and sound art. At the heart of my practice, which also includes fiction cinema, is the importance of the cinematic device and a deep attachment to silver print film. My films, installations and performances have been shown internationally in museums, galleries, theaters, concert halls, and film festivals, including the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, MoMA San Francisco, the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna and the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. Since 2010, I’ve been producing 16 mm projections for Montreal band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I am also co-founder, with Daïchi Saïto, of the Double Négatif collective, dedicated to experimental cinema. My first feature film, Maudite Poutine (2016), was presented in the Orizzonti section of the 73rd Venice Film Festival, organized by the Venice Biennale.
