This video installation focuses on raw sound, a frontal projection showing the base material of handcrafted instruments, without processing or ornamentation. Each vibration exposes the texture, flaws, and resistance of the materials. The image acts as a direct witness to the making of experimental instruments, between gesture, friction, breath, and tension.
Biographical Note:
Ghislain Roy is a gifted musician. For over twenty years, he has been building stringed, motorised, and manually operated instrument-sculptures that he recycles, improves, destroys, and rebuilds in an endless cycle. This is the starting point for improvised music that he modifies with various electronic devices, synthesisers, and drum machines. His music comprises loops that are multiplied, slowed down, sped up, and recycled from old pieces—music of ambiences, textures that are sometimes delicate, melodies, or the unbearable. His work has been seen and heard in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Moncton, as well as on several recordings: Oral Record, Rara Avis, Lretlr, and several self-produced albums. He has been active as a solo artist and in the groups Monday Morning Erection, Le Rossignol et le Roy, and a few collaborations.
