Two young improvisers are coming to Victoriaville to present their bold yet sensitive sonic research work, with a bit of humour thrown in.

EMILIE ŠKRIJELJ’s main instrument is the accordion, but her approach also includes electronics, samples, and extended techniques that put the body of the instrument to good use. The self-taught drummer TOM MALMENDIER is a master of the art of subtlety, as he can populate space with sounds without denaturing silence. There is so much going on in terms of timbres, textures and action when these two are improvising that one could be led to think that there is an electroacoustic tape part involved.

ŠKRIJELJ and MALMENDIER’s duo « Les Marquises » was born in 2019. Since then, the pair has released two CDs and collaborated with American poet Mike Ladd, clarinetist Michael Thieke (as BRUINE), and sax player Elio Amberg (as YOUBITCOLD). Their work together is now at the centre of a small constellation of projects, but they should be discovered first as a duo.
