The GGRIL, Grand Groupe Régional d’Improvisation Libérée, has been going strong against all odds since 2007. Based in Rimouski, it is the ensemble in residence of Tour de Bras, a concert production company and Musique Actuelle record label. The GGRIL is a phenomenon that managed to build and sustain a full-fledged local scene far from large urban centres.

Since its inception, the GGRIL has been focusing on conducted improvisation, graphic scores, improvisation games… anything that will frame free improvisation without taming it. And the group regularly invites composers to workshop with it as part of the Rencontres de musiques spontanées organized by ÉRIC NORMAND. These opportunities have allowed the ensemble to build an impressive repertoire through the years.

The GGRIL has released collaborations with Jean Derome, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Danielle Palardy Roger, Xavier Charles, Evan Parker, John Butcher, Ingrid Laubrock, and Jean-Luc Guionnet, in addition to works by its members. Coming out this fall is a triple CD set of recent works. The four pieces to be performed at FIMAV are taken from that corpus. Their composers are Frédéric Blondy, Lori Freedman, Gus Garside, and Caroline Kraabel.
