It was sound designer MARC URSELLI’s idea to convene guitarist LEE RANALDO, drummer BALÁZS PÁNDI and filmmaker (and part-time guitarist) JIM JARMUSCH for a session. He had worked with each musician individually, though the other three did not know each other much. The result of this studio date came out last spring on Trost. This eponymous debut unveils some sophisticated atmospheric improvised music.
URSELLI is best known as a recording engineer (for countless albums by JOHN ZORN, among others), but he is also a seasoned musician. RANALDO and PÁNDI are better known from our regulars, although the cofounder of Sonic Youth has not set foot in Victoriaville in quite a while. As for PÁNDI, he closed the Festival in 2018. Let it be said, though, that his work in this group is considerably more subtle and nuanced than what he played with Merzbow and MATS GUSTAFSSON two years ago.
JIM JARMUSCH being otherwise engaged, the artists chose to recruit RENÉ LUSSIER in order to maintain the quartet format of the group. With the presence of this master improviser and multifaceted axe player, the project is likely to become... something else!
