How about a trip inside a musical aviary? That is what RAINER WIENS is proposing with « Birds of a Feather ». Each of the twelve musicians (a mix of luminaries from Montreal’s new jazz scene and younger up-and-coming talents) received ten recordings of birdsongs to study. The composer will be assembling the work live through conduction.

RAINER WIENS was born and raised in Germany, but he has been living in Montreal for almost 25 years, where he has cut for himself a prized place in the field of Musique Actuelle. An electric guitarist foremost, he has also become a virtuoso on kalimbas (which are African lamellophones). WIENS has performed several times at our festival as a sideman (notably with Tom Walsh’s NOMA and JEAN DEROME’s “Canot camping” project) and an improviser (including last year in a trio with Malcolm Goldstein and Liu Fang), but this is his first concert at FIMAV as a composer. A nature lover, born storyteller, and sharp observer of the tiny sounds of life, he is inviting us to welcome spring with gusto!
