Scott Thomson : trombone
Trombone player SCOTT THOMSON started his career in the Toronto area, but he has been living in Montreal since 2010. A composer and an improviser, he is also a facilitator of the creative music scene, either at the head of organizations and orchestras or as artistic director of the Guelph Jazz Festival.
He plays or played regularly in Ensemble SuperMusique, Ratchet Orchestra, and Ken Aldcroft’s Convergence Ensemble. Strong in jazz settings, he is fearless in structured improvisation pieces, a genre in which he also excels as a composer of stunning large-scale site-specific works (Montrealers might remember Belgorientation in 2009).
But THOMSON is also a seasoned solo performer. Alone with his trombone, he weaves unusual textures and careful slow-building pieces where each note is given time to reason and resonate. This is particularly highlighted on Murray, an album released by Tour de Bras in early 2020.
THOMSON usually dedicates his solo pieces. The dedicatee of the FIMAV performance is rapper Daniel Dumile, better known as MF DOOM, who passed away last fall.
