A collaboration

Cory Smythe : piano
Chris Tordini : contrebasse
Tyshawn Sorey : batterie, percussion

TYSHAWN SOREY first got noticed as a jazz drummer, but we quickly grasped that he is much more than that. The artistic endeavours of this multi-instrumentalist, composer, and conceptualizer just keep on impressing by their depth and scope. Case in point: the incredible triple album Pillars (Firehouse 12, 2018), a studio aural journey like no other.

On his last appearance at FIMAV, in 2016, SOREY stood out twice: in John Zorn’s « Bagatelles » marathon and as a percussionist in George Lewis’s « Impromptus » project. It was only a matter of time before we would bring him back at the helm of one of his own groupings. His trio has been playing together for a few years, and they have released two albums. Here, the traditional piano-based jazz trio explodes into oblique strands of contemporary chamber music. Cerebral-sounding at first, their music is replete with unusual structures where expected solos are mostly replaced with much more calculated interventions. SOREY (drums and composition) is accompanied by pianist CORY SMYTHE (Hilary Hahn, Anthony Braxton), and bassist CHRIS TORDINI (Claudia Quintet, Matt Mitchell).
