    « Feral Choir »
    TOUPIN, Manon.« La Nouvelle Union », 23 mai 2012
« So Victo took off with a clear message to the community at large : New Music – it’s accessible, it’s fun, it’s for you. »
    EHRENSAFT, Philip. « Exclaim.ca », 24 mai 2012
« Mr Minton is one of the most extraordinary and bizarre singers alive. »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee.
« I couldn’t explain to you what I felt on stage... Exalted, liberated, proud as hell. We performed at a level I couldn’t suspect... we UNDERSTOOD Minton. »
Blogue Monsieur Délire, 19 mai 2012, François Couture
« There are many ways to weigh a music festival, but one method that sets a fairly reasonable standard for excellence is whether or not there was at least one point that elicited feelings of good fortune... there was even one concert that actually stoked the embers of gratitude. The 2012 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville achieved just that with its first concert. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
« I personally felt very inspired after each practice. I felt connected. It was a very positive experience for me as a human being, as a musician, singer, and leader of a choir. » Suzanne Lainesse, Choeur Daveluy Choir Leader.
    BROOMER, Stuart. « PointofDeparture.org » Septembre 2012

    JOHN ZORN2.JohnZornNova
    « Nova Express »
    ÉTATS-UNIS
TOUPIN, Manon. « La Nouvelle Union », 23 mai 2012
« Joey, who is many folks favorite drummer, took one solo that left many of us all astonished. Nobody plays like quite like Mr Baron! »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee. «DowntownMusicGallery.com », Mai 2012

    MARY HALVORSON QUINTET3.MaryHalvorsonQuintet
    ÉTATS-UNIS
    FORTIN, François-Samuel. « CHYZ.ca », 18 mai 2012
« Mary took a handful of guitar solos which completely blew my mind since she doesn’t sound like anyone else in the history of jazz... »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee. «DowntownMusicGallery.com », Mai 2012
« Brooklynite guitarist Mary Halvorson played a memorable set with her new quintet. Halvorson’s playing seems to have grown along with the size of her ensemble. She’s always been a bold guitarist but with this new band she’s demanding greater versatility of herself. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
« For sheer collective spirit and invention, Mary Halvorson’s quintet had few peers... »
    BROOMER, Stuart. « NYCjazzrecord.com », Juillet 2012

    STEPHEN HAYNES
    QUÉBEC, ÉTATS-UNIS
    PREMIÈRE MONDIALE
« Reinvention was key to a set by Quebec’s Maïkotron Unit with Connecticut-based trumpeter Stephen Haynes. Michel and Pierre Côté have learned how to play their hybrids, how to trap air and nudge it through the tubes. The quiet flutters of the ill-begotten instruments made for nice contrast with their passages of free jazz. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
« The Maïkotron Unit played a fascinating set with trumpeter Stephen Haynes. »
    BROOMER, Stuart.

On the screen are two cyclists chasing each other; on stage are two musicians using unusual instruments (a compressed air nozzles and a loop station) to create a surprising soundtrack. Musicians and installation artists GAUTHIER and SABATINI have been collaborating on highly original projects for 14 years.

    ÉTATS-UNIS
    FORTIN, François-Samuel. « CHYZ.ca », 22 mai 2012
« The New York/New England power trio Spanish Donkey laid a heavy, heavy drone with a scream of what truly sounded like Jimi Hendrix-induced controlled feedback. The set may have been a shock to people... »

    JOHN ZORN7.JohnZornTheConcealedPrint 4
    « The Concealed »
    ÉTATS-UNIS
    PETIT, Mathieu. « Voir », 24 mai 2012
« The music was some of the most lovely, creative and astonishing that we’ve heard from Mr Zorn. Trevor Dunn play any better than he did here and his bass solo as absolutely flabberghasting! »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee. «DowntownMusicGallery.com », Mai 2012
« The lyrical music included virtuoso flights into Sephardic modes by the trio of strings while Friedlander played a brilliant unaccompanied piece that mined Flamenco and its middle-Eastern roots. »
    BROOMER, Stuart. « NYCjazzrecord.com », Juillet 2012

    JEAN RENÉ8.JeanRenePrint 1
Fantaisie, humour, tendresse, jeu d’ensemble. Un très beau projet. »
« Great Québécois musique actuelle from yesterday (Lussier, Derome and Guilbeault) and today (Jean René’s original compositions). Whimsy, humour, tenderness, group playing. A very fine project. »
Blogue Monsieur Délire, 19 mai 2012, François Couture
« ...a sort of repertory group led by violist Jean René, who released the remarkable solo recording, Fammi (&records) in 2010. The quartet was lively and precise, and showed once again what a unique group of composers and interpreters there are under the Ambiances Magnétiques banner. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
«Victoriaville-based Jean René led a particularly toughful project... »

    CANADA, QUÉBEC, ANGLETERRE, FRANCE
    PREMIÈRE NORD-AMÉRICAINE
« Manitoba-born, Berlin-based bassist Miles Perkin convened a quartet... that delivered pure and serene abstraction. They played open-ended compositions with open improvisation; they played something like jazz and something like new music; and they played together with never a misstep. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
« The music was very chamber-like, with celeste-like piano, strong, thoughful bowed bass and sparse percussion. It certainly was sublime. »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee. «DowntownMusicGallery.com », Mai 2012

    ENSEMBLE SUPERMUSIQUE10.EnsembleSuperMusiquePrint 4

    PREMIÈRE MONDIALE
« The ensemble also mixed a couple of improvisations into their set, which came off (to their credit) as cohesively as the composed pieces. Ensemble Supermusique is to be tanked for keeping composed chaos fresh. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
« Ensemble Supermusique kept on pushing back the definition of ensemble music, with five complex and well-rehearsed compositions. »

« The blend between Vromb’s dense electronic scapes, Michel Meunier’s psychedelic guitar, and Francoeur’s poems salvaged from the ‘70s was striking. »
Blogue Monsieur Délire, 20 mai 2012, François Couture
« Francoeur did a fine job of spoken word rants that fit well with the spacey sounds of the synth and guitar. »

    BRUNET, Alain.
    FORTIN, François-Samuel. « CHYZ.ca », 22 mai 2012
« His set was spendid. »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee.

    BRUNET, Alain.« La Presse.ca », 20 mai 2012
« Raoul Björkhenheim and Morgan Ågren hit the stage and still kicked some butt! Their playing was extremely tight, focused and powerful. »
    GALLANTER, Bruce Lee. «DowntownMusicGallery.com », Mai 2012
« ...the duo made some muscular thunderous and ultimately joyful noise... »

LAFORTUNE, Steven. « La Nouvelle Union », 23 mai 2012
« The concert employed silence, tension and fantastic peals from Smith’s trumpet, as well as wonderfully evocative real-time video art showing the band and photographs of the music’s subjects (Malcom X, southern fields) into a powerful piece which might well prove to be the 70-years-old Smith’s magnus opus. »
    GOTTSCHALK, Kurt. « All about jazz.com », 4 juin 2012
« ... music (and sometimes silence) of constant grace, focus and energy with tremendous performance by Smith. »

« ...a play, where an old man, a kind of nihilistic preacher, starts by explaining to us that we are made of 12 subatomic particles and, through a sequence of philosophical reflections, ends up convincing us that nothing exists... FORTIN, François-Samuel. « CHYZ.ca », 22 mai 2012
« The sweeping moodiness of that set was matched beautifully by the lightbox scenes of Clea Minaker. »

« The big discovery of Victo 2012 came during concert by New York jazz saxophonist / composer / singer / poet Matana Roberts. “Bid em’in” profoundly powerful musical condemnation of America’s original sin of slavery propelled Roberts’s large free jazz ensemble to take off like a rocket. »

Chose étonnante : à considérer ce parcours rétrospectif, certaines périodes m’apparaissent intimement liées à l’auditif; à la musicalité du visible. » P.B.
