Few people do what KASPER T. TOEPLITZ does, i.e. compose noise music as a form of contemporary music, and very few artists do it at such a level of perfection. TOEPLITZ – an electric bassist, a programmer too – has worked with Zbigniew Karkowski and Tetsuo Furudate, commissioned works from Phill Niblock and Eliane Radigue, composed for Art Zoyd, and created the r.o.s.a. label.
« DATA_Noise » is a captivating piece for two musicians: a noisician and a dancer, placed side by side, each in front of a table. TOEPLITZ’s table supports his laptop and controllers. MYRIAM GOURFINK’s will support her instrument: her own body, fit with motion sensors and accelerometers. This equipment translates her slow and thoughtful movements into data streams that disrupt TOEPLITZ’s work. This is not music with a choreography, but a graphic score performed by two interacting individuals, supported by simple and surprisingly powerful lighting design. This relation of complementary nuisance produces dense, rich, hatched music following an inexorable and perfectly mastered ascending/descending arc.
