Joëlle Léandre : contrebasse
Mat Maneri : violon alto
Craig Taborn : piano

This sublime group, named ROARING TREE trio, assembles three singular voices in contemporary improvised music. JOËLLE LÉANDRE is a giant of the contrabass, a consummate virtuoso who blends the full range of sound to be extracted from her instrument with a fleet melodism that evokes the freedom of the human voice. In this sense, she and violist MAT MANERI are kindred; his dark-toned lyricism curlicues with microtonal detail through any given note, a dazzling sound- and song-world that grinds productively and shines dynamically around the temperament of CRAIG TABORN’s piano. Heavily in-demand in countless contexts, TABORN is one of today’s great pianists, an improviser who chooses pitches and rhythms with uncanny brilliance. « hEARoes » is the title of the trio’s Rogue Art recording, one of the very best of 2023, and a strong argument for, in the right hands, the evergreen vitality of free improvisation.
